Overview

Black and white photo looking down a dirt road. There is a sign in the foreground painted white which reads, 'Look Out For Train". The photograph shows rocks strewn around after the nearby Avon River overflowed its banks.
Rail lines are visible in foreground. There is a brick building with corrugated iron roof to the RHS of photo and behind that several corrugated iron sheds line the road. The LHS of the road has telephone poles and the LHS edge of a brick building (Connors Mill) is visible. The roof of St Stephens Church is visible in the background. Freemasons' Hotel (now the Toodyay Hotel) stables on right. The section of the road shown was then known as Clinton Street. (It was renamed in 1966 as Piesse Street when the rail crossing was closed.)

Contextual information

This was the crossing that four years earlier was the site of the fatal collision between a school bus and a train. Five children died.
This rail crossing no longer exists. When the Standard Gauge rail line opened in 1966 the Clinton Street rail crossing was cut due to the elevation of the railway at this location.
