Ancient Order of Foresters hardwood gavel with engraved metal inscription plate that belonged to W Smith
The Ancient Order of Forresters originated in Leeds, England in 1834 and in Victoria, Australia in 1849. Originally a not for profit organisation, whose mission was to provide financial and social support to members and their families in times of hardship, particularly during the Depression and both World Wars. The societies local branches are called "courts" rather than lodges.

A Gavel is a small ceremonial mallet used to call for attention at meetings or to punctuate rulings and proclamations and would have been used by the Ancient Order.
Brother W. Smith held the position of Chief Ranger and would have used this Gavel at these meetings.
Social significance as it is of particular value to the Ancient Order of Foresters as it embodies the customs and traditions that are important to this society.
