ROUND THE HOUSES RACE, PARADE STREET INTO STIRLING TERRACE

c. 1938
Overview

Black and white photograph taken by C.J.Batelier showing entrants in Albany's"Around The Houses" car race, cornering in front of the Old Gaol from Parade Street into Stirling Terrace.

Historical information

Entrants in the Albany Tourist Trophy Grand Prix event vehicles and exact event year are uncertain.
Seen here negotiating "Hell Corner" at the end of Parade Street, the longest and a steep down hill leg.
The race rules allowed competitors a passenger mechanic as well as the driver. The passenger can be seen here leaning well out of the rear vehicle as they approach the corner, presumably to allow for greater speeds whilst cornering.
This same technique can be observed in similar photographs taken by Batelier during this race.
Decidedly dicey even by the standards of the day.
