First World War Postcard ‘Remember!’ sent to Miss Vera VERGE
1915Black and white printed postcard depicting a group of German soldiers one of whom has just shot a British nurse. The card is scratched and shows signs of wear. There is an address written in pencil on the back and two ink stamps.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front “MARTYRE / de MISS EDITH CAVELL / 12 Octobre 1915 / REMEMBER!”. On back “Miss Vera Verge / 79 Grosvenor Rd / North Perth / Western Australia / Miss Edith CAVELL / lachement assassinee / par un officier allemand / Condamnee a mort par un tribunal militaire en / Belgique, pour avoir favorise l’evasion de soldats / anglais et belges, miss Edith Cavell, de Norwich / infirmiere volontaire, est amence au poleau d’exe / cution le 12 octobre au lever du jour. Elle tombe / evanouie. L’officier allemand donne a ses soldats / l’ordre de faire feu; ils hesitent a tirer sur le / corps pantelant d’une femme. Le monstre ga- / lonne tire son revolver et penche sur la victime / lui brule froidement la cervelle / (REMEMBER!) SOUVENEZ-VOUS!”.
Private Francis Joseph VERGE 3071 (Frank) was Vera’s older brother who enlisted in 1915 serving in the 28th Battalion. He was killed in action early November 1916 in France.
