First World War Postcard ‘Codford’ sent to Miss Vera VERGE
c. 1916Black and white printed postcard of an English village. The roads are unsealed and the shops on the left are very ramshackle and small. There is a horse drawn cart in the background and a number of men in suits and caps. Printed at the top is a description of the picture. On the back is a short hand written letter. Some staining.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front “Codford is situated on the banks of the Wylye, which is crossed by a fine stone / bridge of four Arches. At a short distance is an ancient moated mound, 100 feet in / diameter at the top, of which once stood a castle / CODFORD”. On back “Our camp is 3 miles from / here, but it is our nearest village / There is nothing much in it / and I very seldom go down / Just now the mud is / about a foot deep / Ernie xx”.
