First World War Postcard ‘Ismailia’ sent to Miss Vera VERGE
1916Sepia tone postcard of a lock on a river in France. There is a man in the foreground and several sailboats, one with a sail up. The card is yellow with age. There is a handwritten letter in pencil on the back and three ink stamps.
Part of an extensive collection of postcards received by Vera VERGE. The collection was kept by Vera throughout her life and donated to the Princess Royal Fortress by a family member in 2019.

On front “ISMAILIA – The flood-gate downwards”. On back “On Active Service / no stamps / available / Dear Vera / I have not / received any letter from / you yet but I suppose I will / before long. Tell [sic] I / got the Sunday Times al / right. I expect you have / got those letters I wrote / on the boat alright / Your loving bro / Frank / P.S. wrote this in the dark / Miss Vera Verge / 79 Grosvenor Rd / North Perth / W. Aus”.
Private Francis Joseph VERGE 3071 (Frank) was Vera’s older brother who enlisted in 1915 serving in the 28th Battalion. He was killed in action early November 1916 in France.
