SEAL PRESS, BURT FAMILY, 1800S

Overview

Small, heavy, black metal seal press with green, red, yellow, and white floral design on base and lower part of press arm, and ivory or bone handle. Brass plates with four screws on either side of main body of press and stamping mechanism. Black paint is peeling.

Historical information

Until the arrival of the official Supreme Court seal from England, the Burt family seal press served as the official colonial seal.
The Burt family seal press was brought to the colony by Archibald Paull Burt in January 1861. It was used as the official seal of Western Australia from 1861- January 1862 when the seal ordered from England for the Supreme Court of Western Australia arrived.
