Contextual Information

This document is representative of the adoption of British administrative practices in overseas territories. The document is complete and is in original condition.
The provisional appointment acknowledges Archibald Burt's high standing in the legal and public life of his birthplace of St Christopher (part of the Leeward Island group within the British West Indies) prior to his arrival in Western Australia. (The appointment was not confirmed and another person assumed the role around two months later.)

Burt went on to become a key figure in the development of law in the English tradition in Western Australia and so documents associated with his earlier legal career are of great interest in understanding his actions and motivations in this area in later years.
