Overview

This is an interview with Marjorie Harris. Marjorie grew up in a household where good values were instilled in her. Values that were important to not only the family but to the proper running of the wider community. The father had been in the Scouts and she relates the sort of image that she had of Scouts growing up as a young lady. She would see similar values instilled in children within the scouting movement. When she had children of her own, three boys, they became interested in joining Scouts. It was at this time that she became interested in the scouting movement and ultimately would become involved while helping her children at Scouts. She would become a Cub leader in 1976 to the Subiaco Scout Group. She looks at the Subiaco Cubs as a group and its association with the Subiaco Scout Group based in Rokeby Road, Subiaco. Throughout the interview she describes Cubs and its basic principles, and talks about how she saw it benefit her children and other children within the Subiaco community. She would be awarded a Cub Wood Badge in 1978 and was presented with a Subiaco Award and the Certificate of Appreciation in 1991 for her outstanding contribution as a volunteer to the city. In 1996 she was awarded a 15 year Volunteer Medal in recognition of her involvement. Marjorie would retire from the cub pack as leader in 1997, taking up an administrative role within the Subiaco Scout Group. She talks at length of how the Subiaco Scout group is run and the extensive commitments associated with being involved. She talks of important people associated with the Subiaco Scout Group and of numerous occasions that stick out in her memory of the group. She relates stories associated with the famous Trek Cart and looks at the history of the Subiaco Scout group in association with the development of suburban scouting in Western Australia. Marjorie looks back with pride at her work within the Subiaco Scouting movement and looks at the importance of scouting and future scouting in Western Australia.
