Historical information

In 1954, Queen Elizabeth II became the first reigning monarch to tour Australia. Western Australia was the last stop on her itinerary with visits organised in Kalgoorlie, Perth, Busselton, Albany, Northam, York and Fremantle.

According to 'The Advertiser', the Queen and Duke flew from Perth to Albany and then to Busselton, with the Busselton ceremony held at Busselton's Churchill Park. Weather was poor — “minimum” conditions for approach and rain throughout — but the Royals arrived in an open car, riding standing in the downpour amid applause.
