Historical information

The establishment of the Australian Women’s Army Service (AWAS) on 13 August 1941 was to release men from certain military duties for service with fighting units. Women between the ages of 18 and 45 were recruited and served in a variety of roles including clerks, typists, cooks and drivers.

Handwritten on reverse in black ink – “Work clothes (giggle dress) / outside our quarters, / arriving home from night / duty & sitting on my / palliasse (a hessian bag / filled with straw)” with "I married Bert / Newman's brother / Frank" written in pencil on reserve. Stamped "KODAK ENLARGEMENT" in black ink.

This photograph shows Agnes Mary NOACK in work clothes sitting outside her quarters at Princess Royal Fortress, after finishing night duty. NOACK was one of the first five AWAS Gunner’s based in Albany.
The AWAS Albany group, consisting of 22 women was assigned to the Princess Barracks Albany between December 1942 and November 1943.
