In 1893 the Albany Forts was the first constructed in WA for the purpose of defending Princess Royal Harbour. The Mt Adelaide site for the Fortress overlooking King George Sound provided significant strategic defence capabilities, and in World War One this was the departure point for Australian and New Zealand troops.
