Historical information

In 1893 the Albany Forts was the first constructed in WA for the purpose of defending Princess Royal Harbour. The Mt Adelaide site for the Fortress overlooking King George Sound provided significant strategic defence capabilities, and in World War One this was the departure point for Australian and New Zealand troops.

a. Official Mayoral invitation for Mrs B Newman to attend the re-opening of the Princess Royal Fortress on the weekend of 19/20 November 1988. Mrs NEWMAN, nee NOACK was a member of the AWAS attached to the Fortress between December 1942 and November 1943.after an extensive restoration project

b. Town of Albany complimentary leaflet, “The Forts Albany”. The leaflet contains a map, illustrations and information of the Forts precinct following the extensive restoration project.
c. This “Statement of Philosophy” was developed as a guide to the restoration project which aimed to return the Garrison to reflect “the life, history and heritage of the Princess Royal Fortress in defence of Australia, 1893 – 1956”.
