1945Seven (7) framed black and white printed photographs on off white paper of the formal surrender of the Japanese Second Army with a brief explanation below each photograph. The photographs show the presence of Australian and other Allied troops, the signing of the instrument of surrender by Commander in Chief of the Australian Military Forces General Sir Thomas Blamey, Commander of the Second Japanese Army Lieutenant General Teshima and Senior Naval Officer Captain Omaya.
The end of war with Japan was announced on 15 August 1945. The formal surrender of the Second Japanese Army took place on Morotai Island, the Headquarters of Australia’s forces in the Netherlands East Indies, on 9 September 1945. Before Australian and other Allied troops, the document was signed by the Commander-in-Chief of the Australian Forces, General Sir Thomas Blamey, Lt. General Teshima, Commander of the Japanese Second Army and Senior Naval Officer, Captain Omaya. Representatives of the RAAF, RAN, U.S. and NEI forces were present at the signing in addition to those from the AIF.
