The writer, John Smith (1816-1888) worked as a miller for John Maley and managed his flour mill on the banks of the Irwin River.
George Barnes (1836-1868) was a British plasterer with numerous convictions. He was sent to WA in 1863 on the Clyde (convict no. 7019).
