Order for bricks from George Baston
1867hand written note on blue paper with horizontal and vertical blue lines
George Baston moved to Geraldton in 1857 to manage Henry Gray's store. He later went on to own the Pig and Whistle Inn and from the profits bought blocks of land and built cottages along Marine Terrace, Geraldton. Interestingly Baston was in financial difficulties by 1867 and moved to Fremantle. He later returned to Geraldton and was elected Chairman of the Geraldton Municipality in 1877.
John S. Maley, manager of the Victoria Inn, used his men to make bricks in the early 1860s - the oldest part of his homestead, built 1862, is entirely made of brick. The earliest letter in the Maley Mill & Store Archives mentioning sale of bricks is from 1865.
