Overview

A program of the 1993 17th Asian Baseball Championship Series, held in Perth, Western Australia between February 26 and March 7. The front cover is printed on glossy paper in red, yellow, black and white. Black and white images depict sketches of a baseballer at bat and a runner sliding into base as the baseman is about to receive the ball. Text on the cover includes the names of the tournament and the competing countries, dates and place of the tournament, sponsors' logos and price of the program. Inside pages are printed in colour and black and white on glossy white paper.

Historical information

The 17th Asian Baseball Championship Series was held in Perth, Western Australia from February 26 to March 7. All games took place at the Parry Field International Baseball Stadium in Belmont. Participating countries were China, Chinese Taipei, Japan, DPR Korea, RO Korea, Philippines and Australia.

The tournament was won by defending champions Japan, their 11th Asian Championship and their 3rd consecutive title. North Korea made their first appearance at the tournament—finishing 6th—and became the ninth team to contest the championship. South Korea (2nd), Chinese Taipei (3rd), Australia (4th), China (5th) and Philippines (7th) were the other participants.

Contextual Information

The 17th Asian Baseball Championship was the first in a qualifying series to gain selection for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta. It was also the first time such a major event had been held at the Parry Field International Baseball Stadium.

This program was donated to the Baseball WA Museum & Archives by the family of Alan Luscombe, who at the time of the Championship was Chairman of the West Australian Baseball League.

The tournament was just one of 500 sporting events sponsored by the Australian Tourist Commission as part of the 1993 Year of Sport in Australia.
