Carved flat, shell pendant depicting rising sun cockade around a carved crown with a banner underneath engraved with ‘AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH MILITARY FORCES’.

Historical information

This engraved shell was purchased by Shoeing Smith Charles John Gordon whilst serving overseas in the Australia Imperial Forces (AIF) during the First World War.

Contextual Information

Charles John Gordon was born in Pingelly WA and enlisted at Blackboy Hill Camp in the 27th February 1917. With previous service in the 25th Light Horse Regiment prior to the First World War, he was attached to the 1st Light Horseman as part of the 1st Machine Gun Squadron 4th Reinforcements. He left Australia from Melbourne on board HMAT A73 Commonwealth and return to Australia on 15th May 1919.
Charles has a connection with Major Herbert Bowen Hamlin in regards to the 25th Light Horse Regiment in Pingelly.
