1947 Inter-State Baseball Series plaque

Overview

This Inter-State Baseball Series plaque commemorates the Victorian winners of the 1947 tournament between New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia. The plaque is of bronze-coloured metal with engraved lettering and an image of a baseball player at bat. The plaque is mounted on a faux wooden base. Highlighted in blue is the name and year of the series. Highlighted in black are the names of the competing Australian States, the location of the competition, the winning State and their team members, and the image of the batter.

Historical information

The 1947 Claxton Shield was the eighth annual Claxton Shield, an Australian national baseball tournament. It was held at the Adelaide Oval in Adelaide, South Australia from 2 to 9 August, and was won by Victoria for the first time. The other participating teams were defending champions New South Wales, hosts South Australia and the returning Western Australian team who finished fourth behind South Australia (2nd) and New South Wales (3rd).
The souvenir plaque was from E.H. King, President of the Victorian Baseball Association from 1940 to 1949.

Contextual Information

This plaque was owned and donated by the Dunstan Family. Glen Dunstan was Manager of the 1947 Western Australian team.
At the conclusion of the series the Australian team of the year was selected and Dunstan was appointed team manager.
Other West Australians selected in the Australian team that year were George Dickinson, who was awarded the distinction of being appointed utility player and captain, and Tom Nisbet who was named as reserve catcher. Nisbet was the State's outstanding player in the series and he won the trophy for the best batting average for all States.
