PHOTOGRAPH: VIEW OF LAKE JUALBUP (SHENTON PARK LAKE, DYSON'S SWAMP), 1911
1911Sepia photograph of Lake Jualbub's sandbank, recording marshes, rushes and trees and their reflections in the water.
Lake Jualbup was formerly known as Jualbup by the Noongar people, and later Dyson's Swamp and Shenton Park Lake by European settlers.
At the time of European settlement, this wetland was a popular gathering place for local Aboriginal (Noongar) people, who knew the place as 'Jualbup', meaning 'waterhole for Spring'.
Following European settlement, the wetland was known alternatively as Dyson's Swamp and Shenton Park Lake. In line with the City of Subiaco's Reconciliation Policy, recognition of the significance of the area to the Noongar people saw the lake renamed 'Lake Jualbup' at a ceremony held in the park on 13 July 1996.
Although over time Lake Jualbup has been extensively redeveloped to incorporate vast grassed areas and introduced trees, parts of the shoreline have been replanted with natural vegetation.
