Booklet of 8 pages featuring HMAS Anzac III (FFH 150) at sea on the cover. The booklet provides a profile of the Commissioning Captain, Les Pataky; a description of some of the sea trials undertaken by the ship and a story describing the tradition of towns adopting ships, in this case the City of Albany and HMAS Anzac III; along with photos of Albany and photos of stages of the ship’s construction on the back page. Other items cover the Bathurst class and HMAS Ballarat (J184), and the development of a new transmitter through the cooperation of Australian and New Zealand industries.

Historical information

HMAS Anzac III (FFH 150) was launched on 16 September 1994 by Lieutenant Colonel V. Statham, better known as Vivian Bullwinkle, and commissioned on 18 May 1996. The first of 10 ANZAC Class frigates she was built by Tenix Defence Systems at Williamstown in Victoria. Her first sea trials occurred on 15 January 1996 and were completed in December of the same year. Based at Fleet West Base at HMAS Stirling in Western Australia and adopted by the City of Albany (W.A.), HMAS Anzac’s motto is “United We Stand”. She was the ‘First Lady of the Fleet”, being the oldest ship in the fleet between15 June 2023 and her decommissioning on 18 May 2024.

Contextual Information

The newsletter provides background information prior to the commissioning of HMAS Anzac III. The ship visited Albany on a number of occasions, including taking part in the 2014 commemoration of the convoys leaving Albany (Western Australia) in the First World War.
