“He whom this scroll commemorates was numbered among those who, at the call of King and Country, left all that was dear to them, endured hardness, faced danger, and finally passed out of the sight of men by the path of duty and self-sacrifice, giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom. Let those who come after see to it that his name be not forgotten.”
Underneath in red italic ink – “L/Cpl. John Stapleton / 55th. Bn. A.I.F.”
“Stapleton”, has slight water stain mark.

Contextual Information

The ‘Memorial Scroll’ shows the Royal Coat of Arms, with a special message paying tribute to the soldier who, “giving up their own lives that others might live in freedom”. This scroll is in the name of L/Cpl John Stapleton, 55th Btn AIF.
The scroll became closely associated with the ‘Memorial Plaque’ and similarly it was sent to the next of kin of those serving who lost their lives as a result of the First World War.
