Historical information

Henry Jones Hornby (born in 1869 in Nelson, New Zealand, died in 1943 in Merredin, Western Australia). Son of John Jones Hornby and his wife Louisa (nee Scudder).

From his early 20's, Henry had moved to Australia, working in newspapers in New South Wales where he also played Rugby. By 1897, he was established on the goldfields of Western Australia at Siberia (later Waverley) where he was a store keeper.

He met his future wife, Euphemia Amy Gardiner on the goldfields and they married in Perth in 1907 - their first son was born later that year in Adelaide, South Australia.

By 1908, Henry was proprietor of the "Ship Inn" at Busselton.

Harry was active as a printer in Perth for several years. He then ran hotels at Mundaring and Wagin. From 1924, he lived at Merredin where he was manager of the "Mercury" newspaper until he retired in about 1940. He was also owner of several businesses in Merredin, including the motor garage as well as a Justice of the Peace. He was also active in the local Fire Brigade. In 1939 he took over as manager of the "Mount Magnet Leader" newspaper for a short time.
