This item was part of the baseball memorabilia of the Epps family and was donated to the Baseball Museum & Archives by Bill and Jess Epps' niece Jean Beatson. Bill Epps (team manager) and his son Terry (catcher) are both depicted in the photograph. During the 1950s Bill Epps was a leading baseball umpire in Western Australia and regarded as one of the best umpires in Australia.
Also in the photograph is Roy Gooch (team coach) whose baseball career included representing Western Australia in every State Claxton Shield team between 1946 to 1957 (12 years), including Western Australia's first Claxton Shield win in 1952. Gooch was also selected in the Claxton Shield All-Star Team in 1954 (All-Australian) and coached the WA Claxton Shield in 1960. He was inducted into the Baseball WA Hall of Fame in 2022.
Another notable person in the photograph is Bruce Yardley (aged 14 years), who went on to represent Australia in cricket, playing 33 Test matches and 7 One Day Internationals between 1978 and 1983.
This photographic memento has historic and social significance, recording the names and images of Western Australian junior baseballers who achieved a level of excellence in their sport. It includes images of senior members of the team (Gooch - coach; Epps - manager) whose outstanding careers in baseball (Gooch - player/coach; Epps - player/umpire) endowed another generation of Western Australian baseballers with their skills and knowledge of the game.
