'The Western Mail' newspaper special souvenir edition for the 1986 Claxton Shield Baseball Series final between Western Australia and Victoria featured Western Australian 'Brewers' team member Doug Mateljan. The 1986 Claxton Shield Series was the 47th annual Claxton Shield championship, an Australian national baseball tournament. The participants were South Australia, New South Wales Patriots, Victoria Aces, Western Australian Brewers, Queensland Rams and Northern Territory. The competition continued its eastern and western divisional format adopted in the 1984 Claxton Shield, with the winners of both divisions playing in a final. Eastern Division winners Victoria Aces and Western Division winners Western Australian Brewers contested the finals series at Perry Lakes Baseball Stadium in Perth, Western Australia on 14‒15 February. After a 9‒3 win to Western Australia in the first game, Victoria took the series with 14‒4 and 5‒2 wins in the second and third games.
