Eastern Goldfields Historical Society

Four fire fighters sit on a small horse-drawn wagon in front of a corrugated iron building labelled 'Fire Station'. The wagon is labelled 'Kalgoorlie Fire Brigade'.
Numerous fires in timber, iron and hessian buildings encouraged the establishment of Kalgoorlie’s first Fire Brigade in 1896. When an alarm was signalled, the volunteer fire fighters needed to gather and harness the horses before racing off to the scene of the fire.
