SLOUCH HAT; ARMY
c. 1939 - 1945Khaki Australian Army slouch hat.
Hat band; khaki with red stripe.
Patch colour; grey with a background of black and yellow. Three cornered on grey background.
Right side; feathers (emu plume) of Light Horse Regiment. Australian Rising Sun badge and Australian Commonwealth Military Forces badge.
The hat features the 3rd Pattern "Rising Sun" Badge which was officially used by the Australian Army between 1904 and 1949.
The pleated cotton band around the crown (the puggaree) features a distinct red stripe layered through the centre. In the Australian military, specific colour stripes were added to the standard seven-fold puggaree to identify specific corps, a practice widely utilized during the World War II era. The Unit Colour Patch mounted mounted to the front centre of the puggaree uniquely identifies it as a World War II era insignia for an Australian Light Horse regiment (specifically associated with the 25th Light Horse Regiment / Machine Gun units of that period).
