The Founders Cup event is a men's annual event named in honour of the club's eight Founders (refer to Subject "Founders of MGGC").
The origins of the Founders Cup are detailed in the Council of Management minutes:
7/7/1969: Motion … a suitable Perpetual Trophy, to be known as the ''Founders' Trophy'' be made available by the Club, and that this trophy be made the subject of an annual thirty-six hole event during one weekend.
9/3/1970: '... This event shall be a Bogey (par) invitation. … an amendment that the event be known as the Founders Cup'
This inaugural event was conducted on Sunday 24/5/1970, one year after the club commenced the playing of golf.
The format of the event has undergone many changes in its history.
It is currently an 18 hole stableford event.
Prior to 2017 is was an 18 hole par event.
It was also a 36 hole par event for a period of its existence.
Newsletter April 1982 states that the event reverted from 36 to 18 holes of par when it was conducted on Easter Monday of that year.
Newsletter March 1994 describes it as being fixtured as an 18 hole Sunday morning shotgun event in the club's 25th anniversary year but subsequent Newsletter June 1994 reports that it was postponed due to inclement weather.
Annual Reports also provide some guidance on the change from 36 to 18 holes:
In 1994 the report states that the event was to be played over two consecutive days (Saturday and Sunday) in 1995 for a 36 hole result. In 1995 the report states that the event was to be played on a Saturday over 18 holes as an "invitation" event in 1996.
The Board minutes of 1994 noted that 'Ladies will be welcome to participate in the Founders Cup field, but to play in a separate competition, as the Founders Cup is for men only'.
