The Ron Carroll Trophy, originally titled the "Club and Mug Trophy", is nominally an annual event conducted between MGGC and Royal Fremantle Golf Club.
The event celebrates the close relationships between the two clubs, with several members from Royal Fremantle being instrumental in the formation of Melville Glades Golf Club. It is intended as a friendly rivalry and an evening meal generally follows the day's golf.
The first recorded event occurred in 1973. However, there was an invitational event organised by RFGC in a similar format that occurred in 1969, MGGC's first year of golf (see associated Item Royal Fremantle Golf Invitation 2021.146). The result of the 1969 encounter is not known and it is likely that 1973 marked the commencement of more formal encounters.
From 1973 the event was conducted for many years, with some gaps, until being discontinued in 2007. There is one major gap in results between 1977 and 1984. It was reintroduced in 2017 during MGGC's 50th Anniversary Celebrations and renamed the Ron Carroll Trophy to recognise Ron’s role as both a RFGC member and his contributions to the formation of MGGC.
This change in the name of the event is explained in the associated Item "Ron Carroll Trophy Speech" (Item 2021.175).
Competitions between the two clubs are mixed gender played in four ball playing groups. The pairings from each club in each group total their stableford score to determine a winner and the sum of these results determines the winning club.
