The trophy recognises the winners of the Royal Fremantle Golf Club versus Melville Glades Golf Club event. Winners' names are inscribed on silver plates attached to the wooden base of the trophy. The trophy was originally named the Club and Mug Trophy, obviously based on its construction. The trophy was refurbished and modified when the event was renamed the Ron Carroll Trophy in 2017 during MGGC's 50th anniversary.

The trophy has a jarrah wooden base with a pewter mug mounted in the middle on top of the base. The mug handle is in the shape of a fish. Two golf clubs on shortened shafts are fixed into the cup. On the right (looking from the Ron Carroll title side) is a right-handed Jigger club labelled; "Hand pressed in Australia / Carnoustie Jigger / Stainless Southern Cross (with the Southern Cross stars in between) Special". On the left is a left-handed five iron with labelling: "Solid Rustless / Made in Great Britain, Hand forged, Gibsons of Kinghorn, Silver" (printed within a star shape).

Melville Glades founding member, Tony Kelly (personal communication in 2022) suggested that the trophy was constructed by MGGC professional Richard Brain:

“Richard Brain put that trophy together in the MGGC Proshop from bits and pieces lying around the shop. I recall one of the members donated the block of wood but where the cup came from, I have no idea. The old clubs were cut down to the same length, one left and the other right-handed and glued into the cup with some substance that sets like concrete. The base was then lacquered and the cup polished after which Richard donated it to the club for the purpose of providing a trophy to be played for between the two clubs annually.”
