Eglinton Boat Ribs (Roundabout Sculpture)

Overview

Stand alone scultpure

Historical information

Continuing the drive north up Marmion Avenue towards Yanchep, you come across an elegant large-scale sculpture within a roundabout. The Eglinton Boat Ribs is at the meeting of Pipidinny Road and Marmion Avenue. It is a celebration of the ship, the Eglinton. The wreck of the 462-ton barque Eglinton off the coast of Wanneroo, some 50 km north of Perth, on 3 September 1852, was the sensation of the year. Not only did it add to the list of unfortunate maritime incidents for which the Western Australian coast had become well known, but also deprived a very bare colonial market of a large portion of valuable cargo. The five rib elements of the Eglinton Boat Ribs can be interpreted in many different ways, but their shape generally alludes to parts of a wooden ship.
