RICHARD SPENCER 1779 - 1839

1810
Overview

A restored half portrait oil on canvas of Richard Spencer (later Sir Richard Spencer KCH) as a young man. In this portrait, he is looking directly at the artist. Behind him, a ship in full sail, referencing his naval career, can be seen above his right shoulder. Richard entered the navy at 14 and moved up the ranks to become a captain. Spencer served under Nelson in many battles against the French and was granted a knighthood in 1833 for his outstanding naval career.

Historical information

Sir Richard Spencer KCH was appointed Government Resident for Albany and the Plantagenet districts of Western Australia in 1833. This portrait was found in the 1960s by a local Albany family, and it was in a neglected state. Funding for the restoration came primarily from money raised by subscription by appeals to Spencer’s descendants.
