Overview

Sepia toned image of five horses and carts, with drivers, in front of a store which is a tea garden. All carts are two wheelers hitched to a single horse. Trees out front of tea rooms are at either end of front verandah. Gabled roof with sign on front saying [BRIGATTIS / BOTANICAL TEA GARDENS]. Under verandah is a black rectangle sign with text relating to Derry Na Sura wines [DERRY NASURA VINEYARD / ARMADALE / PUREST HIGH CLASS WINES / Obtainable Here]. In front windows are jars. The carts out front have text on side. The second from left cart is a butchers cart. Boy with blazer and boater hat holding dog standing in front of horse and carts.

Historical information

An image of the tea rooms that were owned by the Pound family and was originally located in Cottesloe but was later moved to Croyden Rd in Rolystone. The tea rooms advertised the Derry Na Sura wine.
Derry Na Sura Winery was located on Albany Highway in Armadale. It was started in 1896 and operated until the 1950s when it was sold first for farm land and then subdivided for housing. Today the suburb of Mt Nasura covers much of the old vineyard. In the 1910s-1930s it was one of the largest wine producers in the state.

Statement of significance

This object is a part of a collection that represents the skills and scientific knowledge required to produce wine and fortified wines in a commercial vineyard and how the products of the wineries were sold and marketed across Western Australia. The collection also represents the important role wine making played in the agricultural development of the City of Armadale from the late 1800s to the mid 1900s. During this period several large and small commercial vineyards operated along Albany Highway and the South West Highway.
