MACHINE EMBROIDERY, PANEL
1996This art wall hanging, ‘ASIAN HANGING’, inspired by the war in the Middle East in 1996, was stitched by UK textile artist and tutor Jean Mobbs-Webb.
It was one of her pieces of her work, displayed in her workshop, ‘Machine Embroidery With Metal’, for the Embroiderers’ Guild of WA in 1997.
A geometric design, with embroidered metal shapes on felt laid on a jacquard fabric background.
The edges of the fabric have been burnt, reflecting the elements of war. Wooden rod with cord to hang.
The accompanying statement states: “ASIAN HANGING” in the Middle East the walls of the homes in towns and villages crumble through neglect and war. Yet against this background of decay, the work of the craftsman survives, his spirit endures in its colourful tradition.” Jean Mobbs-Webb, Summer 1996
