Overview

Silver medal with an ornate silver framework attached to the top of the medal. The front of the medal displays a wreath of laurel and eucalyptus leaves encircling engraving that states ' Awarded to J.C.Lane 2-11-27'. The back of the medal displays classical stylism in the form of a woman in Ancient Greek clothing standing at left placing a wreath on the head of a young man kneeling at the right and below Southern Cross. The wording surrounding the scene states 'VIRTUTE PARATUM' translates as Bravery Rewarded.'

The framework attached to the medal supports a black (navy) ribbon with clip that allows for adjustment of the length of the ribbon.

The medal is displayed in a black box with fastener and cream silk lining inside with the words ' Medallists Stokes & Sons Pty Ltd Melbourne. The front of the box exhibits the inscription 'Presented by THE ROYAL HUMANE SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIAN TO J.C.LANE 2-11-27' and printed in gold.

Historical information

The Medal makers business was renamed as Stokes and Son Pty Ltd when they became a proprietary concern in 1911.

Engraved on edge of medal ' The royal Humane Society of Australia INSTD A.D. 1874

On the cover of the box ' Presented by the Royal Humane Society of Australia to J.C.Lane 2-11-27. The writing is surrounded by a gold line. Inside the box is stamped 'MEDALLISTS' Stokes & Sons Pty Ltd Melbourne.

Contextual Information

On 2nd November 1927, Clarence James Armstrong(39), Arthur Reginald Gillow (32) and Oliver Edgar Conduit(23) lost their lives by drowning at Torpedo Rocks, Yallingup. Clarence James Armstrong lost his life attempting to save Oliver Edgar Conduit from drowning, while John Lane, Rowland (Len) Blythe, Edward Dawson, Victor Wallace and Vincent Williamson were highly recommended for their bravery in risking their lives in attempting to save Oliver Conduit from drowning. John Lane received a bravery award medal for 'bravery in attempted rescue of Oliver Conduit drowned at Yallingup 1927'.

Award recipients were encouraged and entitled to wear their medal in the right lapel.
