Historical information

Alfred Sandover (MBE) (1866-1958), son of William Sandover and Mary Billing nee Bates, was born in Plymouth, Devon, England.

Graduated from North Adelaide Grammar School in 1881.

In 1884, Alfred joined his brother William in Perth where William had established a pharmacy and hardware business.

In 1895, married Rose Allen (1895-1943) at the St Georges Church Of England, Malvern, Victoria.

In 1896, Alfred and Rose bought an 8 acre property in Claremont, which they named Knutsford.

Alfred and Rose had three children: Alfred Eric (1897-1983), Kathleen Mary (1900-1992) and John Oswald Alan (1906-1988).

Was prominent in the business, philanthropic and sporting life of Perth.

In 1921, donated the Sandover medal, which has been presented annually to the fairest and best player in the West Australian Football League.

Held office in several cricket clubs, collected fine furniture and paintings, and loved to read.

Was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.) in 1951.
