WW1 Soldiers Housewife
Small "Soldiers Housewife" sewing kit made of coarse khaki cotton material probably chino. The kit would of held wool, cotton, needles, buttons and all the items required for emergency uniform repair in 2 small three sided pockets at each end of the sewing kit. In between these pockets is a square piece of cotton in which the needles are kept. The sewing kit is rectangular when spread out and at one end where there is a dark strip of cotton which serves to secure the kit when it is rolled closed.

Details
Soldiers had to make their own running repairs to damaged clothing and equipment and these "housewives" were invaluable as they were light and did not take up too much space in their packs.
