BHS Girls Country Week Hockey Team 1957

Mary Walker (Captain) Centre forward. For two seasons Mary has captained the team directing and inspiring them always to greater efforts with her own speed, skill and originality of play and experience gained from 4 years of “A” grade Hockey. Added to her assets is umpiring ability, which deepens her perceptions for actual interest.

Margaret Thomson (Vice Captain). Representing the school for the second time, ably leading the half back line into persistent attack and defence and setting an example in the position of vice-captain. With her stamina and reliable stick work makes Margaret an envaluable team member. N.B. Those forwards always need “backing” Marg.

Margaret Donaldson Left full back. Sure stickwork and remarkable anticipation combined with good defensive strokes makes Meg a stalwart left back, though a vital lack of speed for quick sprints is a definite handicap — represented school for 2 years.

Dulcie Kickett Right wing. Earlier training as a forward proved invaluable when Dulcie represented the school in Perth for the 2nd year as R.F.B. For the initiative one looks for in this position is obvious as well as speed, hard-hitting and active co-operation with the other backs.

Helen Gardiner Right wing. A newcomer to the 1st Team who coped rapidly with the demands of “A” grade, developing steady “tramline” play, confident centreing combined with an ability to follow through which became marked late in the season. More determined tackling back after an interception will improve her play.

Iolanthe Edwards Left inner. A bright manner and responsiveness to coaching made Iolanthe a reliable left inner, though a more aggressive attitude must be developed in the goal circle with determined following through.

Maxine Greaves Left wing. New to the game, Maxine tackled the difficulties of left wing with vigour and her centre passing became reliably hard though a tendency to defensiveness in the goal circle leaves the position open for the opposition to pass out.

Penny Donaldson Goalie. A strong decisive clearing kick and hit, quick reactions and a marked gameness in the face of opposition made Penny a goalie on whom we could rely, though a less flamboyant approach is to be desired.

Diane Connel Right inner. The defence attack play expected of a right inner in receiving passes and inefficiency near the goal circle when a clean hard hit is required weakens her standard.

Audrey Hack Left half back. In her 1st “A” grade season this 2nd year showing great potentiality in the half back line has proved herself equal to the demands. Immaturity has led to an indeterminate approach to positional play when a situation becomes complex.

Julia Leapingwell Right full back. One of our new fourth years who brings a steady temperament yet lacks a consistent hard hit and the ability to readily interchange with the other defence players.

Heather Allen Right half back. In representing the School in Perth, Heather proved her worth as a half back, displaying plenty of vitality and the aggressiveness the position demands though needs to stay close behind the forwards when they are in the goal circle.

Elizabeth Lathwell A young half back who faced the vigorous “A” grade standard well, displaying increasing ability in rolls, but needs to take free hits in a less haphazard manner and to mark the correct opponent when playing defensively.
