PHOTOGRAPH: BERT CONGDON, LETTER CARRIER

1920
Overview

The black and white image shows Bert Congdon standing centrally with his right hand on the handlebars of a bicycle. He is dressed in the uniform of a postman with a cap, leggings and a leather satchel across his body. He holds a bundle of mail in his left hand. A rolled bundle is tied to the handlebars with string. There is a corrugated iron building behind him with a stone building to the left.
Writing in blue ink on back of photograph, reads "BERT CONGDON / POSTMAN AT / CLAREMONT WEST AUST / IN THE 1920 TO 1922".

Historical information

Bert Congdon joined the P.M.G. at Claremont Post Office in 1913. Served with AIF in WW1. Returned to postal service after war. Later served at Subiaco and, at outbreak of WW2, at GPO. Bert was the driving force behind the Subiaco Radio Society (SRS). Members met in his shack - a converted shed in his backyard - for the first 14 years. On many occasions he paid members' subscriptions himself. SRS members stated in the 1940s: 'Bert is the Society'. (The Broadcaster, June 28th, 1944).
