PHOTOGRAPH: POSTAL WORKERS, CLAREMONT

Overview

Sepia photograph glued to dark brown mount. Subject - 9 male and 1 female postal workers, Claremont Post Office. 5 young men are wearing letter carriers' uniforms. Two of these are identified - Bert Congdon on left end of back row and Dan Gallagher on right. Two older men wear 3 piece suits, one very young man a suit and t and & another, a white shirt and light jacket. The lady is wearing a white bl and e & long dark skirt. The group are posed on the verandah of the Claremont Post Office. Writing in black pen on back of photo reads: CLAREMONT POST OFFICE TOP ROW LEFT TO RIGHT BERT CONGDON DAN GALLAGHER(?)

Historical information

Bert Congdon joined the P.M.G. at Claremont Post Office in 1913. Served with AIF in WW1. Returned to postal service after war. Later served at Subiaco and, at outbreak of WW2, at GPO. He was founder of Subiaco Radio Society.

Statement of significance

historical importance -record of suburban Post office staff close to Subiaco area early 20th century. One staff member, Bert Congdon, lived in Subiaco and later worked at the Subiaco Post Office illustrates clothing of postal workers of the era.
