MACHINE, CIGARETTE ROLLING - EXPRESS

Overview

A Express Brand Cigarette Rolling Machine. It is a metallic case with a rolling mechanism attached.

The top of the machine has a hexagon corrugated lead, silver collar for rolling tobacco to make cigarettes.

Historical information

Tobacco cigarettes used to be handrolled before the invention of automated machines. This Express branded machine allowed the user to hand roll their cigarettes more easily. Machine rolled cigarettes would become increasingly available in the late 1890s to early 1900s, but were more expensive than ones rolled by hand.

This hand operated machine was used Oscar Bruns in the 1940s and later in the 50s by Mr John Bruns to roll their own cigarettes on Wongong Farm.

Statement of significance

This is an example of the kind of device used by people in the Armadale area to roll their cigarrettes. This was used by Oscar Bruns in the 1940s and later by his son John Bruns to roll their cigarettes.

The change in smoking habits made by governmental programs to reduce the number of smokers in the population have rendered machines such as this a rare sight to see compared to the mid 1900s.
