Historical information

The Toern was the first whale chaser purchased by the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company. The purchase took place in Sandefjord, Norway, and the ship was sailed to Albany by Norwegian Captain Rolf Elnan. The ship served in Albany from 1952 - 1961. At the end of service the Cheynes was sold to a scrap metal dealer before being scuttled near Michaelmas Island in King George Sound.

On 20 June 1952, Page 91, the Norwegian crew went on strike due to the previous month's pay not having been received by their family back home. This was rectified and the crew paid, then they went ashore and sent the money home to Norway.
