TIN, 'ROWNTREE'S CLEAR GUMS'
c. 1925 - 1935Rectangular metal tin with hinged lid containing remnants of unidentified material including possibly paper fragments & metal powder.
The tin is rusted, exterior markings obscured. The design inside the lid is still legible however. Printed in capitals in decreasing size 'ROWNTREES / CLEAR GUMS / MAKERS OF THE REGISTERED / ROWNTREE & CO LTD / ELECT COCOA' Surrounding the words is a geometric design made up of rows of squared with 'R' inside.
There are small rusted holes in the sides of the tin. On the lid, & immediately below are two punched holes.
The tin was found concealed in a cavity in the chimney of a house built in c1890.
Found in 2001 in a roof cavity inside the chimney at 12 Drummond Street by Robert Frayne. The purpose of this concealment is unknown. The property, a residential dwelling, was built by Henry Hassell c1890.
The graphic design of the tin indicates it may date from the 1920s or 1930s. Sometime in the early part of the 20th century 'Clear Gums' were replaced with 'Fruit Gums' and the name became Rountrees without an apostrophe.
