Australian Light Horse sweetheart pendant
c. 1915Oval, gold toned metal sweetheart pendant containing a portrait of the head and shoulders of an Australian Light Horseman.
He is wearing his slouch hat with the traditional adornment of emu feathers. The chin strap is positioned under his lips rather than his chin. Rising Sun collar badges are visible on his uniform.
The pendant is quite deep with the back held on by small appendages attached to the lower edge of the border.
There is a metal suspender loop perpendicular to the pendant at the top, through which a parallel metal ring is attached. A chain could then be threaded through this ring to wear the pendant around the neck.
There are no hallmarks or maker's marks.
The identity of the Australian Light Horseman in the portrait is unknown. Photo lockets, pendants and brooches were very popular during wartime and there are a large number of them in the collection.
It is possible that this pendant opens to reveal something within, as the depth seems excessive otherwise. However, it would need to be prised open to reveal any contents.
