Commemorative plate celebrating the Coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth
1937Decorative, commemorative souvenir plate celebrating the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1937.
It features sepia portraits of the King and Queen in oval frames with the flags of the United Kingdom behind them and depictions of the floral emblems (Tudor rose and oak leaves) between them.
Above their portraits, a crown and the date '1937' are displayed, with the inscription 'Long may they reign' below.
There are four motifs placed at the top, bottom, left and right of the plate. They feature the Royal Standard on one side and the Union Jack on the other, between which the Crown and 'GR VI' are printed.
The plate has raised edges and moulded decoration on either side. The edge of the plate has gilding, much of which has worn off.
The reverse of the plate has a central maker's mark, but is otherwise plain.
The plate commemorates the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (later known as the Queen Mother), which took place on May 12, 1937, at Westminster Abbey in London.
King George VI ascended to the throne following the abdication of his brother, Edward VIII, in December 1936.
