Davenport collector plate 'Sink the Bismarck' from 'Action Stations' series
Dinner plate sized vitrified plate entitled 'Sink the Bismarck' in the series 'Action Stations' based on a painting by British artist, Simon A. Smith.
The upper half of the plate depicts the Royal Navy battlecruiser, HMS Hood, ploughing through the waves in front of a pink, cloudy sky, with the White Ensign flying above it. To the left is a map of the Denmark Strait between Greenland and Iceland, indicating the point where the HMS Hood was sunk.
In the centre of the plate are two RAF Fairey Swordfish biplanes dropping torpedoes and below them, the German ship, Bismarck. The British warships, HMS Suffolk and HMS Norfolk with guns firing, appear either side of the Bismarck. Plumes of water from where the shells are hitting the water surround the German vessel.
The plate has a gold border just inside from the rim.
The reverse has printed details relating to the production and number of the plate.
The plate depicts the May 1941 event known as the Battle of the Denmark Strait, during which the HMS Hood was sunk by the German warship Bismarck.
It is part of a series entitled 'Action Stations' which originally would have been boxed and come with a limited edition certificate.
