Historical information

Marshall Clifton, the eldest son of Rev. Francis Clifton, was born on 1st November, 1787. While in England he held a clerical position with the Admiralty and was promoted to the position of Victualing Board Secretary, which he held until 1832.

With his wife and family Clifton sailed from England on the "Park field” on 6th December, 1840, to participate in the settlement of Australind, as the Chief Commissioner of the Western Australian Company.

Despite the failure of the Australind venture, Clifton persevered and provided active leadership in local affairs.

He was appointed Magistrate of the Territory in 1841, and in 1844 he was selected as an inaugural member of the Leschenault (later Wellington) Road Board.

During the period 1850-58 he served the colony as a member of the Legislative Council.

Marshall Clifton died in 1861 having provided this locality with dedication and inspiration during difficult pioneering years.
