Historical information

John Ramsden Wollaston was born in England in 1791 and after being ordained a Minister came to Western Australia in 1841 as cleric to the new Australind Settlement. With his family he took up land at Picton and built the Picton Church with his own hands. His epic struggle and his devotion to his cause can be read in his journals and these reveal the great character of the man.

In 1848 Wollaston became an Archdeacon and gave great service in the Albany region, a position he held until his death in 1856.

He is best remembered for his force of character and the inspiration he gave to others to make a success of the difficult situation that faced the pioneers in the early years of Western Australia.
