Historical information

James Mitchell was born in Bunbury on the 27th April, 1866. He was educated in Bunbury and joined the staff of the Western Australian Bank, where his abilities soon won him quick promotion.

His career in politics was most illustrious. He was a minister of the Crown on many occasions, premier 1919 - 24, 1930 - 33, and he is best known in this field for his great work in opening up the South West area to group settlement.

He held the position of Lieut. Governor from 1933 until 1948 when he became Governor until 1951. He held the great honour of being the only Australian born Governor of Western Australia. He held many honours and was knighted as early as 1921.

He died on 26th July, 1951.

James Mitchell must be regarded as one of Bunbury’s greatest sons. Circa 1962 Bunbury Senior High School renamed red faction Mitchell in recognition the significant role played by James Mitchell in the development of the school and the state.
