Historical information

John Forrest was born in 1847, at Picton, of pioneering parents. He showed early aptitude at school in Bunbury and was sent with special recommendation to Bishop Hale’s School in Perth.

He later trained for surveying under T. C. Carey and showed such leadership and initiative that in 1869 he was appointed to lead an expedition in search of the remains of the missing explorer Leichhart. These explorations were the beginning of a great career in leadership.

Forrest in turn was acting commissioner of Crown Lands, Premier of Western Australia throughout the 1890's, Federal Minister on several occasions and at one time acting Prime Minister.

He was knighted, and in February, 1918, he was created Lord Forrest, Baron of Bunbury. He died soon after on September 18, 1918, at sea, on his way to take his seat in the House of Lords.
