Historical information

The bible was a gift to Jansje 'Jane' Slobbe by her father Aart Slobbe in the 1960s. The bible in in Dutch as most of the services held at the Dutch Free Reformed Church in the 1960s through to the late 1970s were in Dutch. Jane used the bible when attending services at the Armadale and Kelmscott churches'. Jane stopped using the bible in the 1980s when services moved to English.
The Slobbe family moved to the Armadale district from Rotterdam in Holland in 1949. They worked at a dairy on Thomas Road

Statement of significance

This object is part of a collection that tells the story of individuals and families that either voluntarily or were forced to leave their home and migrate to Western Australia from 1829 to modern day. These stories relate to leaving family and a known lifestyle and culture behind, embarking on a journey that for some was long, and creating a new home in an unfamiliar land with an unfamiliar culture.
